In "Portsmouth to Cardiff" [376471/32172/20]
Posted by Trowres at 21:58, 25th June 2026

Amongst all the heat-related problems today...

Journeycheck is reporting multiple axle counter problems between Bath and Bristol this evening. It's difficult to tell how much effect this is having as so many trains have been cancelled anyway.

Not sure how it relates, but, as I write this at 21:47, the last train to call at Bradford on Avon seems to have been Cardiff-Portsmouth (truncated to Bristol-Fratton) at 17:37. At least one Bristol-Portsmouth service (1F27) appears to have run via Melksham, and one in the opposite direction (1F28).

Just in: 1F32 Fratton-Cardiff has called at BoA at 21:58.

In the past, when I was working for large financial organisations, I have occasionally stayed in UK hotels overnight, during a two-day meeting away from Bristol, for example.

More recently, in February, I stayed overnight in the excellent Corinium Hotel in Cirencester, where member of staff Andy (who has been there for twenty years) insisted on carrying my very light-weight rucksack upstairs when he showed me to my room.

The theme here is that, rather than my collecting various items from the room, I'm unfortunately more likely to leave with less items than those with which I arrived.  Rather than use the hotel's shower gel, for example, I prefer to pack a small bottle of my own preferred brand and use that.  However, on several occasions, I have omitted to repack my own bottles from the bathroom when I leave.

Hopefully, they will have been appreciated by the next guest.

In amongst all the cancellations, an extra service today:
Westbury: 2040
Trowbridge: 2046
Melksham: 2056
Chippenham: 2112
Bath: 2126
Bristol: a2140.

This service, 1U85, wasn't activated in the "system" until 20:46, so the actual times before Bradford Jn are not recorded. The train does not seem to be visible in journey planner queries nor on TIGER, so it may come as a welcome surprise for some people waiting for delayed trains.

With thanks to all Coffee Shop members who have contributed to this discussion, I've now revised / expanded the topic heading, to better reflect that this is becoming a definitive coverage of developments regarding this canal.

My automated logging system that has been running since January - automatically scraping the last 24 hour's records in the middle of the night - has had a spanner thrown in its works, as the place I have scraped it from has gone "human only", identified me as a 'bot and stopped my access.   I'm not surprised; it was useful while it lasted but it was a "quick and dirty" way of monitoring.  I will see what I can do to find an alternative when I'm back in the UK early next month.  For sure it could be done using industry data and significant learning and effort; I'm not sure if I'm up to/for that.

In the meantime, a huge THANK YOU to members who help me log the cancellations and other goings on with this service.   Your posts will be all the more vital now.

Preston, Lancashire: woman dead, girl, 8, injured as train hits car at Hoghton
In "The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom" [376459/32170/51]

From the BBC:

Woman dead and girl, 8, injured as train hits car

A woman has died and an eight-year-old girl is in hospital with critical injuries after their car was struck by a train at a level crossing.

It happened at about 08:50 BST at a crossing on Station Road in Hoghton, near Preston in Lancashire, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

Paramedics and the fire service are in attendance, but there have been no other injuries reported, while the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) announced investigators have been sent to the scene.

Northern Trains warned there would be no trains running between Preston and Blackburn "until further notice" and passengers should not attempt to travel between the stations today.

North West Ambulance Service said several clinical teams attended the scene, including the hazardous area response team and two air ambulances.

"Sadly, a child has sustained life-threatening injuries and has been taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital for further treatment. No passengers from the train required treatment from ambulance crews," a spokesman said.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services told the BBC four fire engines and specialist appliances are in attendance and are asking the public to avoid the area.

BTP Supt Jamie McGowan said: "Today's events are truly devastating, and our thoughts are firmly with the family of the woman who sadly lost her life and the young girl in hospital with serious injuries. Members of their family are being supported by specially trained officers."

Chris Wright, Network Rail North West route director, said they are "working closely with the emergency services" following the "tragic incident".

"We will fully support the investigation by the emergency services and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to understand what has happened," he said.

Tricia Williams, managing director of Northern, said: "We can confirm the 7.51am Colne to Preston service was involved in a collision with a car at a level crossing in Hoghton this morning. Our thoughts are with the person who sadly died in the collision and the other passenger in the car who has been taken to hospital. We are now working to support the emergency services, Network Rail and Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and will co-operate fully with the investigation into what happened."

A spokesperson for RAIB said a team of inspectors has been sent to gather evidence as part of a preliminary examination and "a decision on whether or not an investigation will be launched will be taken in the coming days".

Anyone who witnessed what happened has been asked to contact British Transport Police.

Continuing my adventures around the Baltic (and I may need to retitle this thread)

I am travelling by InterRAIL and so rail it is where possible. England to France, Luxembourg, Germany and Poland are "well known" and straightforward, and a previous post covered my travels up from Poland by train and then ferry up the east side of the Baltic to Finland. Two nights in Finland and I am now going around the top of the gulf of Bothnia.

* Finland to Sweden

Standard advice is to get the train to Kemi and then the bus to Tornio (about half an hour), walk across the international bridge, and get the onward bus to Lulea and then to Umea.  But this is a rail journey, and there is a daily train (or rather a single overnight train) from Helsinki to Kolari in Lapland which makes the only call of the day at Tornio East.  And so, overnight in Kemi and down to the station early in the morning for the 07:56.  Station almost deserted but waiting room open, warm, welcoming.

[snip]

And to to Tornio. It's a station that over a decade ago I compared in my train campaign blog to our local station at Melksham, without even seeing the place or pictures of it.  "The only place in Europe that doesn't have any trains calling in daylight in the winter".  Yeah - it's just about on the Arctic circle in Tornio, with an 08:21 northbound and a 22:16 southbound.

[snip]

I'll be walking over to the Swedish shore - to the town of Haparanda - from where there is a copious service of three trains a day onwards. Two of these leave early in the morning long before I got here, so I'm headed for the 14:28.  Plenty of time - it's only 11:50 as I write, or is that 10:50 as I'm about to step back in time by an hour.  I'll follow up with this text to complete the sort once I'm in my next country, time zone and currency.  I am running out of pockets to keep coinage apart ...

[snip]

What an astonishing surprise!  Haparanda Station is the most astonishing building and the railway here has a history that deserves a complete article. Perhaps I should not have been surprised, for this is a strategic crossing point for people going between the East and the West, and between different sides and neutral zones too in times of war.  The buildings are magnificent to reflect the aspirations of the people who build them, and in recent years have been rescued and restored;  there is still work to do, perhaps, and the place has latent possibilities as it awaits visitors.  A refurbished cafe complete with a hot food display looks like it has never been used. And large interpretation boards - in Swedish Finish, and of course English tell the story.

Part of the story is that the rail service from here (the first station over the border from Finland) was only restored on 1st April 2021 - together with an intermediate station - so it would seem that this journey I am making today is something that wouldn't have been possible a handful of years ago.  My friend Heli in Oulu was telling me that they are looking to electrify the line on their side. I'm not so sure it's "build it and they will come" but the twin border town are quite respectable in size and I can see it happening.

https://www.vr.fi/en/by-train-to-haaparanta

Soon you can travel to Sweden by train

A total of 28 trains per week will run between Oulu and Haparanda from August 10, 2026, with connections to long-distance trains heading toward Helsinki. The connection to Sweden also makes it possible to travel overland to other parts of Europe.

Good - though in some ways sad that my adventure 2 years ago won't be so much of an adventure in the future.

Have mentioned this elsewhere, but it's worth noting that a lot of the "more trains than usual needing repair" excuse would appear to be due to insufficient aircon in drivers' cabs.

Really in south we should be specifying equipment that can cope with 35c and work properly, 35c is not unheard off number of days each year.

High 30s are rare, might not cool to ideal 21c, but should be able to knock at least 13c off ambient temperature if designed to cope at 35c

I wonder what temperature the a/c equipment in 158, 166, 175s were specified for, I am guessing something nearer 30-32c,  but that should still drop temps into 20s, or is it simply just not being maintained well enough to do what it was designed for and can't drop temperature and remove humidity.

Calling hotel staff by name?  Positively creepy, and puts me in mind of TV/radio news where presenter and reporter feel the need to repeat each others' names, or an overenthusiastic estate agent or car sales person.

..................and politicians !

You'll also find that people call each other by name at the start of films / new TV shows too.

As (former) hotel staff, it can be welcome to be acknowledged by name from time to time / as a person and to help you do so was suggested as a reason for name badges.  We typically had only one or two people on duty, and tended to introduce ourselves by name when we checked people in to help us be more approachable, and we used names in continuity - "I'm around until 9 O'clock this evening and [name] will be in tomorrow morning at breakfast".

I am staying tonight at the Giardino Del Geco in Brindisi. When I checked in Alessio and Cristina introduced themselves by name, and the information folder has a "meet you hosts" page with their names and picture too.  In talking with them, I would / do feel comfortable using their names in natural conversation.

Last week I was on a delayed train in Austria with non-functioning a/c when a member of onboard staff unlocked a cupboard near my seat to reveal a large stash of bottled water which was then distributed among passengers. That wouldn't happen here I'd guess because operators would rather use the space to cram in more seats.

Devon and Cornwall improvements under GWR have only happened because they were led by the nose, someone else was paying, screaming and kicking.
They could have improved Newquay, Okehampton, Barnstaple services, half hour trains at Paignton 20 years ago but didn't want to spend the money as they saw no return.
So it cannot be worse.

Andy Burnham's coup, if he succeeds, isn't without precedent. When labour came to power in London in May 1981 there was an overnight coup and Ken Livingston became mayor. It herald more than 30 years of transport policy when successive mayors, tory and labour, gave pensioners more and more to become the envy of everyone else. In Torbay it is still Buses only from 0930hrs Mon-Fri.
